A SECOND West Cumbrian vets has warned dog owners of parvovirus - a highly contagious and often fatal disease affecting dogs.

The Vet, Whitehaven has warned dog owners to 'be vigilant' after one confirmed case of the disease at their neighbouring practice.

In a statement on social media The Vet, Whitehaven said: "Sadly our neighbouring practice has had confirmed cases of Parvovirus. Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes an infectious gastrointestinal disease in dogs, without treatment it has the potential to be deadly.

"Be vigilant and be aware of symptoms: Bloody Diarrhoea, Vomiting, Fever, Lethargy, Dehydration, Depression.

"Please make sure your dog is vaccinated. If you would like to check please send us an email hello@thevetwhitehaven.co.uk or if you are worried that your dog is exhibiting symptoms."

The warning comes just a day after West Cumbrian veterinary group Millcroft ,based in Cockermouth urged people in the area to make sure their dogs are vaccinated against the virus.

They said they had been made aware of confirmed cases of Parvovirus local to Cockermouth and surrounding areas..
