Wigton Town Council are working with local police to clamp down on illegal parking in the area.

Police have already handed out over 100 warnings and after discussions with the council, they are now considering fines to those that are caught by cameras.

Earlier this year, the News & Star spoke to Wigton residents, who raised concerns about the state of parking and pavements in Wigton, especially for those with mobility issues.

Wigton Town Council confirmed: "We have been working with the Police to consider ways to reduce illegal parking in Wigton including by the Fountain, outside B&M and outside the Spar. The Police have been present on quite a few occasions talking to people who have parked illegally and have given out over 100 warnings.

"Their aim is to try and educate and reach as many people in Wigton as possible to let them know that they shouldn't park in these areas and that Market Hill is free (two hours) as well as the car park opposite the Spar. After talking to the Police this week, they are considering issuing fines using the cameras that are in Wigton to discourage this illegal parking.

"This will be a last-case scenario but will happen if people continually park in these areas. So spread the word, encourage everyone to use the car parks as the Police don't want to issue fines unless they have to. We will keep you updated!"

Last month, Carlisle Police also suggested that parking would be monitored more closely after a number of offences on King Street.

They wrote: "If you park opposite or too close to a junction, you can be prosecuted for careless and inconsiderate driving. Over the last few months your Neighbourhood Police have been warning most people, but going forward, we will be monitoring the parking more closely, including using the cameras on King Street, to offer penalty notices with points on your license or send people to Court.

"Whilst the Police do not enforce double yellows, we will be sharing our findings with the Council and can prosecute other parking offences where danger or obstructions occur."
