Carlisle's Wreay Road is set to re-open ‘later than planned’ according to Cumberland Council due to work on the city's Southern Link Road (CSLR).

Wreay Road was set to open on Monday, July 29 but this will be delayed as works will still be going on in the ‘immediate area’.

The road has been closed for a long period of time as works on the CSLR continue.

The CSLR project is one of the biggest council projects in the North of England with the £212million project set to enhance connections between the south of the city to the M6, linking junction 42 of the motorway to Peter Lane.

The road is also key to the St Cuthbert’s Garden Village project which would see 10,000 new homes be built on the outskirts of Carlisle.

A spokesperson for Cumberland Council said: “Due to circumstances outside of our control, Wreay Road will be re-opening later than planned on Monday, July 29. Some works will still be ongoing in the immediate area.

“During the closure, we've made significant progress on the new Brisco Roundabout. Our team has worked diligently to address several complicated issues, requiring additional time to plan and coordinate with external parties to resolve the issues we encountered.

“We sincerely thank the public for their patience and understanding as we continue to improve the road network. Your support is greatly appreciated.”

The CSLR is on track for a completion date next year with a planned opening date in October 2025.
