A Penrith-based boatbuilder has built new canoes for young people to enjoy at YMCA Lakeside in Windermere.

A group canoe, which can accommodate up to 13 people, has been delivered and is providing a fun and accessible introduction to being on the lake.

Martin Barry, senior operations manager at YMCA Lakeside, said: “This type of canoe is very stable.

“We can use it in poorer weather conditions without additional safety support. Also boatbuilder Mark Aplin from Solway Dory has designed a small outrigger which helps to stabilise the canoes.

“Made from scratch, they take Mark and his assistant about four months to build.

“Our canoes are “tiger boat” Group Canoes which were designed by Mark’s business partner, Dave Stubbs who is now retired.

“There are four others on Coniston Water, and two on Derwentwater.

“Once launched the canoes will stay in the water for the majority of the year, coming out for short periods in the winter for a bit of TLC.

“We expect them to last a good 10 years or more.”

The YMCA Lakeside residential centre has facilitated quality residential and day experiences to youths for more than 70 years with a yearly attendance of 12,000.

Mr Barry said: "Set in 100 acres of private woodland, we mainly run day camps and residential courses for primary and secondary school groups, plus some older apprentice groups.

"We make the most of our natural location, offering more than 50 water and land-based activities,"

This project was made possible with support from Westmorland and Furness Council and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
