Passengers on the Settle Carlisle railway will now be able to enjoy artisan coffee on their travels.

Passengers onboard the scenic railway are being served ethically sourced, quality coffee from Skipton-based roaster, Kane Pulford-Roberts of The Clubhouse Coffee Roasters.

The new addition to the railway's well-loved refreshment trolley comes courtesy of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, which is committed to showcasing local products along its line.

Mr Pulford-Roberts's passion for coffee roasting started during lockdown.

It led him on a journey to South America where he met the farmers cultivating the coffee beans.

He even handpicked some of the beans for the popular Settle Carlisle railway blend during his trip to Peru.

Mr Pulford-Roberts said: "Having my coffee available on the Settle Carlisle refreshment trolley is amazing.

"I am passionate about good, sustainable and ethical coffee and to share this with the many visitors and local people who travel on the line is wonderful."

All of Mr Pulford-Roberts's coffee is roasted at his premises in Skipton, where he also operates The Clubhouse Coffee and Cycles shop.

Mr Pulford-Roberts added: "By roasting our own coffee beans we have the control to choose the flavours and quality of our coffee and ensure it is sourced ethically."

The aim of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company is to provide quality refreshments for the millions of passengers it serves each year while supporting communities along the line.

The railway line was voted as 'the best scenic railway in Europe' by travel publishers Lonely Planet.

Susie Payne, Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company’s operational manager, said: "We are always looking for new suppliers along our line, and when I tasted Kane’s coffee and heard the story of how he sources his beans ethically and sustainably, he was the ideal business to work with."

This year, the trolley service is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

To commemorate the occasion, Penrith brewer Eden Brewery have concocted a new Settle Carlisle ale and members of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company have even modelled for a 2025 calendar.

A ten per cent portion of the calendar's profits will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Donations to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance can be made via the Settle Carlisle Railway CRP’s Facebook page.

Passengers can now enjoy The Clubhouse Coffee and the Eden Brewery ale from the trolley service this summer and the 2025 calendar is also available.

All of these will also be sold through the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company’s online shop: settle-carlisle.co.uk/shop/settle-carlisle.co.uk/shop/
