AN iconic sporting goods shop in Carlisle has witnessed 'steady' growth and significant physical changes after nearly four months of new ownership.

Paul Wasilkowski, co-owner of Boyd Hair & Beauty, took over the Abbey Street shop, Chivers, in April after a chance conversation with previous co-owner Stuart Goodman, ahead of retirement plans.

Under a slight rebranding to Chivers Running, Paul seeks to cement the store's running specialty offering coinciding with a slight redesign of the shop's frontage.

"We’ve had an absolute deluge of positive comments on Facebook and Instagram with the new signage," Paul said.

"I think it’s livened up that part of the town."

Compliments about the store's updated shop front have been received from as high as Carlisle Castle.

“Our windows were blocked out before as we had a display on the inside.

"Now we’ve taken the display down, everyone can see visually into the shop and that makes a difference.

"I have definitely noticed more people walking past and popping in just from what they've seen outside," he said.

A significant addition to the shop, which dates back to 1945, is the announcement of New Balance to the store's inventory, joining the ranks of Brooks, Hoka, Saucony, and Ronhill.

“We’ve brought New Balance on with us which is great news," Paul said.

"We’re now a New Balance stockist which helps with that Cumbria connection with them having a headquarters here.

“We’re pleased to bring them on board from a running perspective – it’s another string to our bow," Paul said.

Additionally, Paul announced the business is in the process of working towards the launch of a brand new website featuring an online shopping platform.

You can still expect to see familiar faces, such as Stuart on site, as they continue to help Paul get settled into his new role.
