Carlisle’s much-loved Pie Demand bakery has won its first Great Taste Award.
The 2024 award was claimed by their classic pork and caramelised onion sausage roll, which also recently garnered a first-class contract with TransPennine Express.
Owner Laura Twigg, who only started the business with her partner Brian in 2019, said: "We’re thrilled to have won the award.
"We sell a lot of sausage rolls, combined with the TransPennine contract, it's definitely our most popular."
To make their winning pastry, the couple uses good "quality pork" and Claire’s Handmade carmelised chutney.
The chutney creator, based in Wigton, also bagged two Great Taste Awards this year under Claire's Handmade Ltd label for its Sweet Piccalilli and Spicy Garlic and Tomato Salsa Dip.
In addition to the award, Pie Demand has been basking in success with the opening of a new deli-style unit on Water Street at the beginning of June, a response to heightened demand.
Pie Demand's tasty offerings can be sampled at the new deli, Houghton Hall, their pop-up at Carlisle Railway Station, within first-class carriages on TransPennine Express trains spanning Manchester to Liverpool, and Glasgow to Edinburgh.
Other spots include Fenwick Newcastle, farmers markets, agricultural shows, and food festivals across Cumbria.
