HUNDREDS gathered in a Workington park over the weekend to celebrate the towns many musical, culture and sporting achievements.

Workington Town Council hosted a 'Party in the Park' event on Saturday, July 27 with many coming together in Vulcan Park, Workington to celebrate all the best in the town.

The sun was shining as the day started off at 11am with a parade from Vulcan's Lane with the Mayor, Zebra Finches and the wonderful Miss Cindy Hoten- a well known singer from Workington.

A delegation from Selm in Germany, one of Workington's twin towns also attended the event to celebrate the strong bonds that have been formed between the two towns over the last 30 years.

The Workington Twinning Association planted a special tree in the park to celebrate the strong bonds which have been created by the two towns over the last three decades.

There was also a trophy presentation to Workington Zebra Finches women's rugby union team, who made history this year with a double win of the Papa Johns Cup trophy and have had much sporting success in recent years.

Workington Mayor, Neil Schofield said: "What a fantastic family event Workington Town Council put on with Party in the Park. Congratulations to everyone who helped organise and facilitate this spectacular community gathering.

"The weather made an appearance, which added to the fun factor. Lots of different stalls with great gifts and information regarding community activity and support. Cindy Hoten was amazing as always, along with Sooty and the other acts. It was great to be able to present Workington Zebra Finches to the stage to celebrate their historic win, the only 2 in a row champions of the Papa John trophy.

"Celebrating 30 years of Twinning with our German town Selm by planting a tree in the park. All in all, a fantastic day was had by everyone and I can't wait for the next event."

Throughout the day families were also treated to a performance of The Sooty Show, along with many other wonderful acts.

There was also a fair ground and many stalls for attendees to enjoy throughout the day.
