Cumbrian swimmer Luke Greenbank suffered heartbreak at the Olympics - being disqualified after his heat.

The Cockermouth star produced a strong opening performance at Paris 2024 to win heat four with a time of 1.56.08min.

But Greenbank was then devastated to learn he had been disqualified.

It was deemed that the Cumbrian had gone more than 15m under water - the limit allowed in the competition - after the final turn of his race at the 150m mark.

Greenbank looked crestfallen when learning of the outcome after the race.

The former Cockermouth School boy had posted the fastest time in Wednesday morning's qualifying, and was ahead of German's Lukas Martens and Hubert Kos in his heat, also beating Team GB team-mate Oliver Morgan into sixth.

After Greenbank's disqualification, Morgan moved up to fifth and qualified for this evening's semi-finals.

Greenbank, 26, had been hoping to emulate his success at the Tokyo Olympics when he won a silver and bronze in 2021.

The man who started out at Cockermouth Swimming Club came into Paris 2024 in good form but his 200m dreams have now been dashed.

"I don't know what to say, absolutely gutted," he said after the race.

"It's really annoying, I feel like I'm on good form."
