Penrith Fire Station have released more details following a lorry fire on the A66 in Cumbria earlier this week.

At 07:36 on July 30, Penrith and Appleby fire station responded to reports of a lorry carrying straw on fire. Appleby's unimog water carrier and Penrith's water bowser supported by Penrith's second appliance also attended.

The driver acted quickly, detaching the trailer, and with the help of a local farmer with his load, all the flat bed was also moved clear.

The crews used both controlled burn and water application tactics to bring the incident to a close and reopen the carriageway as quickly as possible.

Penrith Fire Station said: Water supply can be difficult on major roadways like the A66, so the unimog with it's 4000L and the bowser with 8000L of water can be used to supplement the 2000L each appliance carries. These appliances made trips to hydrants located in villages close by to maintain our water supply.

"We would like to thank all those affected by this incident this morning for their patience."
