Workington Reds' Greg McCaragher has left the club - just weeks after it was announced he was staying.

The 25-year-old has left Borough Park after two years with the Reds.

The club announced that McCaragher was leaving to "pursue other opportunities" in the game.

The versatile player has paid tribute to the club for an enjoyable time which included promotion under Danny Grainger in 2023.

"I’d like to wish everyone @WorkingtonAFC all the very best," McCaragher wrote on X.

"As much as I will miss playing in front of the Reds fans, I feel now is the right time for a fresh start.

"I’ve absolutely loved the past few seasons and I’m looking forward to whatever is next!"

Workington announced on July 10 that McCaragher was one of three players committing to the club for the new campaign.

But now Reds said McCaragher "has decided to leave the club to pursue other football opportunities."

The club added: "Greg has been a excellent servant to the club and we wish him nothing but the best going forward."

McCaragher started out with Burnley and Fleetwood Town and later played for Kendal Town, Widnes and Penrith.

His departure comes after Workington bolstered their squad with two new loan players just over a week before the new season.

Manager Mark Fell has brought in young Gateshead duo Ben Williams and Ben Fell.

The defensive pair will add to Fell's options for the new Northern Premier League Premier Division season.

Reds chalked up a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers B in their latest pre-season friendly this week, thanks to a goal from Steven Rigg.

Fell's side go to Clitheroe this Saturday on the last weekend before the league campaign gets under way.
