Highways teams for Cumberland Council have implemented emergency temporary traffic management measures on Honister Pass following a routine inspection that revealed damage to a culvert.
Effective immediately, the measures will include speed and weight restrictions to ensure the safety of all road users.
The location, between the Slate Mine Visitors centre and Seatoller Village on Honister pass is particularly busy during this peak holiday season, and Cumberland Council recognise its importance to both local residents and visitors and so aim to minimise disruption. The damage required prompt action to prevent further deterioration and to maintain the structural integrity of the road.
The following traffic restrictions will be in place until further notice in the immediate area surrounding the culvert:
- Temporary speed limit of 10 mph
- Weight restriction of 20 tonnes are prohibited from using the area surrounding the culvert.
Large vehicles and HGV’s are advised to not use Honister pass or if unavoidable, access the area via the Buttermere side of Honister Pass.
Cumberland Council said: "Cumberland Council is committed to maintaining the safety and accessibility of our roads. We apologise for any inconvenience these measures may cause and appreciate the public’s cooperation and understanding. Further works will be required to implement a permanent solution.
"We encourage road users to plan their journeys accordingly and to consider alternative routes where possible."
