Cumberland Council has implemented emergency temporary traffic management measures on Honister Pass, after a routine inspection revealed damage to a culvert.
The affected area lies between the Slate Mine visitors centre and Seatoller Village.
Until further notice, the area will be subject to a temporary speed limit of 10mph, and a weight restriction of 20 tonnes.
Large vehicles and HGVs are advised not to use Honister Pass, and to approach via the Buttermere side if the route must be used.
The council reported that the damage required prompt action to prevent further deterioration, and to maintain the structural integrity of the road.
The council wishes to apologise for any inconvenience the measures may cause, and appreciates the public's understanding and cooperation.
