AFTER nearly six months of regeneration work, Carlisle's Devonshire Street marked its official opening with a party event last weekend.

On Saturday, August 3, Cumberland Council welcomed hundreds of visitors, including new MP Julie Minns, to the new-look street for an afternoon of free music and entertainment, giving members of the public an opportunity to support businesses such as The Thin White Duke and In The Meantime, which have found the last five months difficult.

From 1pm until 6pm, local bands and performers, including 99 Mr Benns, Ryan Davidson, Somethin' Brewin', The Window View and Red Handed Siren entertained the crowd on stage.

The project construction began in February 2024, and has been successfully completed in five months, transforming the area with outdoor seating, street furniture, benches, cycle parking, trees, and plants.

This £2.04 million government-funded investment sought to create a high-quality, welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.

Leader of Cumberland Council, Councillor Mark Fryer, said:

"The turnout and enthusiasm from the community exceeded our expectations. It was wonderful to see Devonshire Street come alive with such incredible music and to celebrate this significant milestone with so many enthusiastic locals.

"The day was marked by a strong sense of community spirit, lively performances, and a fantastic atmosphere, making it a memorable occasion for everyone involved. The new road opening is not just a practical achievement but a testament to the vibrant community and local partnerships that continue to drive progress in the Cumberland area.”

The Devonshire Street project is part of a broader regeneration initiative in Carlisle, which will see work shortly begin on Market Square.

Cumberland Council said: "A brilliant afternoon celebrating the completion of the newly-regenerated Devonshire Street in Carlisle.

"Thanks to everyone who came down for the party and supported the fabulous bands and local businesses."
