Famed for being a book town and gateway to the Howgills fell range, the small town of Sedbergh is also somewhat of a foodie paradise, owing to the high-quality ingredients sourced locally and creative chefs making waves on the culinary scene.
At the peak of that scene is The Dalesman, a historic coaching inn located in the heart of the town. Having undergone a major refurbishment in 2023 and with the appointment of a new head chef, the inn is aiming to put itself on the map as one of Cumbria’s most exciting culinary destinations.
Open seven days a week, it has continued to maintain a high level of gastronomy with its two AA Rosette rating.
While visitors to The Dalesman can expect to find pub classics such as steak and ale pie, burgers and their take on fish and chips, the menu is also peppered with more inventive and creative options, including the star dish of their twice baked cheese souffle.
Meanwhile, those popping in just for drinks will also find an equally exciting menu that ranges from locally produced ales to clean, crisp lagers from the continent.
The Dalesman also produces its own gin.
Made in conjunction with a local distiller and infused with ingredients grown within The Dalesman’s very own kitchen garden, Sedbergh Gin is available to enjoy at the bar and also to purchase as a bottle to take home.
Away from The Dalesman the town of Sedbergh offers plenty to see and do, with a number of bookshops, antique shops and gift shops to explore.
Alternatively take to the fells for a peaceful walk.
One of the town’s most quirky attractions is nearby Farfield Mill, a fascinating venue where it’s possible to discover new artists, learn a new skill, shop for unusual gifts and textiles or explore the museum, all under one roof!
The former Victorian woollen mill dates back to 1836 and features four floors for exploration including an onsite tearoom serving up light lunches and cakes against a backdrop of the Cumbrian Dales.
Sedbergh is easy to reach via road and rail, with bus routes to the town from Kendal or Oxenholme train station.
