Teenage Carlisle boxing champion John Joe Carrigan will fly the flag for England in Germany this week.

The Border City Amateur Boxing club star will represent the nation in the Youth Brandenburg Cup.

He is part of a 12-strong England squad to take on European opponents in Berlin over the coming days.

It is a latest international outing in an England vest for Carrigan, who is the reigning European youth boxing champion.

The Carlisle teenager will compete in the under-70kg category in the 29th staging of the competition in Germany’s capital, where the action takes place between today and Saturday.

Ian Archibald, coach at Border City ABC, says Carrigan will be targeting another victory – and his club are behind him all the way.

“It’s quite a prestigious tournament, and there should be some good opposition for John Joe,” Archibald said.

“He’s in good shape, he’s put the work in as he always does and hopefully it will be another positive experience.

“He’s trained hard – it’s up to him now.”

Carrigan won the EUBC Youth Champion in the U-71kg category in April – the second time he has been crowned European champion.

The young boxer’s exciting progress means he will also box on the world state at the youth world boxing championships in the USA in October.

“England didn’t go last year because of the situation in Russia, but they are going this year – and there will be a bigger pot of opponents for him, from countries like America, Cuba and Mexico.

“I can’t think of anyone from around here who has done what John Joe is doing – to be European champion already and then to have the chance to win a world title is something special.

“We’re all right behind him.”
