With the summer holidays soon ending you’ll now probably be searching for a way to make the most of your weekends.
So how about a day trip to one of Cumbria’s best indoor attractions - the Lakeland Motor Museum at Backbarrow?
On Saturday, September 7 there’s even more to see than usual at the jam-packed museum which has over 30,000 exhibits including over 140 classic cars and motorbikes.
The first Saturday of every month is when the Lakeland Historic Car Club meets there, giving the chance to view some of Cumbria’s most eye-catching vehicles as they park up outside the museum.
Everyone is welcome, whether you are an owner, an enthusiast or you’re just keen to see some classic local cars.
Club members arrive at the museum at around 10am and leave after lunch (around 12.30pm).
The museum will also be hosting the Rover P4 Drivers’ Guild from around 2pm onwards.
It’s dedicated to supporting owners of the mid-size luxury saloon car produced by Rover from 1949 to 1964.
Vehicles belonging to members of the Drivers’ Guild will be displayed in the outdoor exhibition area just outside the museum entrance.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Rover P4 entering production – so it’s a big year for the guild!
Once you’ve seen the collection of cars gathered outside, head inside to tour the museum collection.
There’s speed king Donald Campbell’s Bentley, a “Back to the Future” DeLorean and the oldest surviving TVR sports car to name but a few.
The Campbell Bluebird Exhibition, a tribute to the racing careers of Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell, is housed in its own unique building on site and features full sized replicas of their historic boats and cars.
There are motorcycles and scooters tracing the development of some classic British marques, bicycles dating back to the 1870s and a section paying tribute to the Isle of Man TT Races.
The museum’s location, close by the River Leven, is worth a visit in its own right.
You can sit on the terrace at the onsite Café Ambio overlooking the river and enjoy a nice drink or something to eat.
There’s also the museum gift shop to have a browse around for gifts.
And if you live in Cumbria or North Lancashire you can apply for a Local Residents' Discount Card which, between October and May, gives you a 50 per cent discount on entry prices.
It gives you 20 per cent off for the rest of the year. It can also be used at the museum’s sister company Windermere Lake Cruises.
