Heptathlete Kate O'Connor, who is the partner of Carlisle United striker Georgie Kelly, has been praised for her strong showing at the Olympic Games.

O'Connor finished 14th in the heptathlon after the second day of competition in Paris.

The Irish athlete produced a season's best time when finishing sixth in the final event, the 800m, on Friday evening with a time of 2:13.25.

That saw O'Connor record 6,167 points in total in the competition.

The 23-year-old from Dundalk made history as the first Irish heptathlete to compete at an Olympic Games.

Athletics Ireland described her performance among the international elite as "an incredible achievement".

O'Connor moved up the field on Friday after starting the day in 19th position overall following the first day's events.

Solid performances in the long jump and javelin, followed by her strong 800m run, saw her move up five places at the Stade de France.

Her points total was just outside her own Irish record in the heptathlon.

Team GB's Katarina Johnson-Thompson took silver, finishing behind three-time Olympic champion Nafissathou Thiam of Belgium, with Belgian Noor Vidts claiming bronze.

Another British athlete, Jade O'Dowda, finished tenth.
