A CARLISLE pub is delighted to have been recognised for over 15 years of commitment to real ale.

The Spinners Arms, in Cummersdale, have been presented with a Silver Medal by Solway CAMRA after having featured for over 15 consecutive years in the Good Beer Guide.

Alain and Alison Davis took over the pub in 2007, sourcing beers from various local locations to create a selection that reflected their own tastes.

This dedication quickly earned the pub a strong reputation, leading to its early inclusion in the Good Beer Guide.

In 2013, the duo expanded their offerings by establishing a microbrewery, known as Carlisle Brewing Co., at the back of the pub.

Since then, the Spinners Arms has focused on serving its own brews, a move that has further solidified its standing among the local beer community.

“Apart from making me feel very old, it’s fantastic,” Alison said.

“We couldn’t have done it without the support of customers and CAMRA members who come in to judge us.

“The staff we’ve had over the years have helped massively, they have been part of the parcel in us getting these scores and awards as well as people behind the scenes, such as friends and family,” she said.

The duo brought the first brewery back to Carlisle since 1987 from the back of their pub before they expanded into a larger production premise in Kingstown Industrial Estate in 2015, where they still produce a range of popular beers such as Flaxen and blondes like Citadel to this day.

The ever-popular Spun Gold has also made literary history having featured as the favourite beer of author M.W. Craven’s famous character Washington Poe.

The journey has not been without its difficulties, however.

From recessions to rising energy bills and the pandemic, the pub has had to consistently adapt to the ever-changing landscape that goes hand-in-hand with the hospitality industry.

“The hospitality industry has faced a lot of problems over the years, it’s changed considerably since we took it on in 2007.

"To still be here and supply great real ale to people is a great achievement.

“Alain and I are very happy to have received something that acknowledges that length of time,” she said.

Carlisle Brewing Company is housed in pubs all throughout Carlisle and Cumbria with even an option to purchase bottles online.
