A COMMUNITY is pulling together after a devastating fire that has affected a number of buildings in a west Cumbrian village.

Police were called to assist colleagues from Cumbria Fire and Rescue at the scene in Gosforth at 7.06am this morning, August 15.

It is understood that the fire has affected the Budgens store in the village, as well as a home.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service reported they were called to the village at 6.35am to a fire affecting a commercial premises.

Ten fire engines, a welfare unit and a joint incident command unit were called from across Cumbria to deal with the incident.

Fire crews used seven breathing apparatus, three hose reel jets and two thermal imaging camera's to try and tackle the blaze.

This afternoon, Cumbria Fire and Rescue service said: "We currently have five appliances and the aerial ladder platform on the scene, continuing to firefight, dampening the affected areas down within the buildings and targeting hot spots that are emerging.

"The road remains closed while this response is ongoing.

"We encourage residents and businesses in the vicinity to keep your windows and doors closed."

Following news of the fire, the community of Gosforth has pulled together to try and help those affected by the situation.

A fundraising page has been set up to 'to raise funds for two families who have been deeply affected' with more than £2,000 being raised already to help.

The fundraiser said: "In times like these, our community’s strength lies in our unity and willingness to help one another. Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference. Let’s stand together and support those who have lost so much."

Gosforth Parish Council also issued an 'urgent appeal' for help to those affected.

In a statement the parish council said: "Due to the current situation regarding the village shop, we are looking for clothing and shoes."

The village church has been set up as a donation centre following the blaze, with St Marys Church Gosforth taking to Facebook to say: "The family that live at the shop had to leave without anything and the Parish Council asked if St Mary’s Church will be a donation point for clothes etc for the family.

"With our thoughts and prayers for the family."
