A group of Carlisle United fans are at Brunton Park today helping spruce up the ground.

As part of a supporters’ trust initiative, about a dozen Blues fans are doing painting work in different parts of United’s home.

Barriers, stairways, gates and railings are receiving a fresh lick of paint, after supporters responded to a call by the Carlisle United Supporters’ Trust for volunteers.

Those behind and involved in the initiative say it is simply a way of helping the club.

CUST chair Dan MacLennan, who was at Brunton Park today helping oversee the volunteer group, told the News & Star: “The trust always try and organise a couple of volunteer days in the summer.

“We have a few members and fans who just like to help out at the club.

“We have liaised with Nigel Clibbens [the club’s chief executive] about some of the jobs that it would be helpful to do.

“And Ian Holmes, the club decorator, is on hand to keep us all right.”

Among the areas getting spruced up today were steps in the Warwick Road End, which were getting fresh coats of yellow paint, as well as some of the yellow barriers in the home terrace.

At the other end of the ground, gates and fencing at the northern end of the Paddock, near the Waterworks End, were also getting some long-overdue attention, while the Waterworks turnstile areas are also due to some paint work.

All materials are provided by the club.

MacLennan added: “I know there are some who say, ‘The club should just spend its money on getting these things done’, but some people just like helping the club.

“It’s another link between the fans and the club and as a trust we like to be the sort of middle-man.

“There are a couple of volunteers who help the club out quite regularly, with tidying up after matches and things like that, and it’s sort of an extension of that.

“Everyone knows what an upturn the club is on at the moment [under the Piataks] and it’s just good to be involved.”
