A MAJOR Cumbrian classic car show has revved into its 'most successful year yet'.

840 car entries from over 30 different motor clubs took part at the region's biggest car show, the Cumbria Classic & Motorsport Show, over the weekend.

Organised by Wigton Motor Club, 'bumper crowds' travelled from across the north to experience the spectacle at Dalemain Mansion with entrants coming from as far as Fife and Epsom.

This year's theme was centred around German and French automobiles with special classes for such vehicles.

Saturday's Rose & Thistle Tour drew an enthusiastic crowd, with over 90 cars embarking on the 140-mile trip that began in Carlisle, journeyed to the Borders, and culminated with tea in Penrith after a lunch halt in Hexham.

Wigton Motor Club secretary Graeme Forrester said: "The car park at Dalemain was overflowing with enthusiasts who were entertained by a dog show in the morning and the ever-popular autotest which brought new members to the ever-growing Wigton Motor Club.

"The many trade stands and charities did a roaring trade," he said.

In the mid-afternoon, class winners paraded into the arena for the much-anticipated 'Car of the Show' vote.

This coveted title was won by David Martin and his Post Office telephone liveried Morris Z van.

"The Wigton Motor Club stand had a display of competition cars for all levels of competition from the M Sport World Rally Car to those used on local targa rallies," Graeme said.

"A number of well-known motoring personalities visited the show including Malcolm Wilson OBE, of M Sport.

"A great weekend and planning now starts in next year’s event."
