The resurfacing of a main road in Cumbria is due to begin later this month, resulting in its closure for several nights.

It affects the A596 in Aspatria and from Low Whinnow to Micklethwaite, and will be carried out by the council’s contractor Connect Roads.

A596 Aspatria Resurfacing

  • Start Date: Wednesday 28 August 2024
  • Duration: four nights, weather dependant.
  • Time: 7pm – 6am each night

Work in Aspatria will start on August 28 and continue for four nights from 7pm to 6am.

During this time, the road in that area will be closed and a clearly marked diversion route will be in place, Cumberland Council said.

They advised residents to plan journeys in advance and follow the designated signs.

They also asked that all vehicles be removed from the road by 7pm on August 28 and that alternative parking is sought for the duration of the works.

A596 Low Whinnow to Micklethwaite Resurfacing

  • Start Date: Sunday 1 September 2024
  • Duration: Three weeks, weather dependant
  • Time: 7pm - 6am each night

Work from Low Whinnow to Micklethwaite will start on September 1 for three weeks from 7pm to 6am.

These works are, like the Aspatria works, subject to weather conditions and may be changed if needed, the council said.

The A596 in this area will be closed in the evening during this time, and a signed diversion route will be available.

They advised residents to plan journeys in advance and follow the designated signs.

For both resurfacing projects, access for emergency vehicles will always be maintained.

The road will be closed overnight only, with temporary two-way traffic signals in place at some locations where structural treatments are being performed.

Residents needing access during the evening should discuss this with the traffic marshal on site who will also be able to answer any other queries that people may have.

Cumberland Council member Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable, resilient and connected places, said: “We understand that road improvements can be disruptive, and we sincerely appreciate the patience and cooperation of our communities.

“Our continued aim is to enhance the entire network for everyone’s benefit, and we will always work closely with local stakeholders and residents to minimise any inconvenience that this causes while we improve your journeys.”
