CORNERSTONE has been selected as a finalist in The Lanes Shopping Centre's £1,000 Community Fund.
The organisation, which is located on Denton Street, provides a community coffee bar in Denton Holme which is run by volunteers.
As part of The Lanes' Community Fund, which was launched in April, Cornerstone was selected by a panel of judges as one of six finalists who would be in the running for the funding.
After being chosen as a finalist, Cornerstone's manager Andy Blake was on hand to explain more about the local charity.
He said: "Cornerstone is a community coffee bar in Denton Holme, run by volunteers.
"We run an affordable coffee bar creating a space for our community to meet.
"Many people see Cornerstone as an extension to their own home, spending most of the day chatting to our volunteers, without the pressure to spend any money.
"We offer a ‘pay it forward’ scheme allowing people to buy a drink for someone else in need.
"We run a busy food bank that operates four days a week which is a lifeline for so many people, not just in Denton Holme, but across the city.
"During term time we provide a free weekly community breakfast that feeds up to 60 people every week, many of which are children before they go to school."
Andy also explained what Cornerstone would do with the £1,000 fund if it was selected as a winner.
He said: "Cornerstone hosts free community activities such as a weekly craft group and we run a weekly well-being café where we provide free drinks and activities and a space for people to talk.
"If successful we would use most of the money to keep the foodbank and breakfast topped up, but we would also like to purchase some new activities that will be used at the free wellbeing café."
Voting for The Lanes Shopping Centre's £1,000 Community Fund opened on Tuesday, August 27 via the shopping centre's Facebook page.
Voting will close on Tuesday, September 3, with the recipient of the fund set to be announced shortly after and locals are encouraged to support their favourite before the public voting period concludes.
