Twelve days after a devastating fire broke out in the heart of Gosforth, the local community has banded together to raise over £19,000 to support the families who lost their homes and livelihoods.

On August 15, early in the morning, a fire spread through several buildings in the village, including the Budgens store on Main Street.

The fire, which severely damaged two properties, displaced Michelle and David Ancell, who ran the Budgens store and lived above the shop with their children and pets.

Speaking to the Whitehaven News, the family who lost their home and livelihood have since thanked the community for their ‘overwhelming’ kindness during a difficult time.

Despite the quick response of emergency services and their own swift evacuation, the family lost their parrot, Alfie, and one of their cats, Maurice, to the blaze.

The property next door was also affected by the fire.

In the week following the fire, Cumbria’s fire and rescue team returned to Gosforth to offer support and guidance to residents.

Accompanied by Cumbria Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner David Allen, members of Green Watch met with locals to discuss fire safety and emergency escape plans.

They also fitted smoke alarms for those in need, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community moving forward.

The Gosforth Parish Council was also actively involved in the relief efforts. At the time of the fire, the council issued an urgent appeal for clothing donations to support those affected.

A donation point was set up at St Mary’s Church, which quickly filled with clothing and essential items, thanks to the generosity of the community.

The fundraising page created to aid those affected is still open for donations.
