A LIFE-SAVING charity based in West Cumbria is set to be the focus of an upcoming episode of the Channel 5 series, Rescue 999: Seconds To Save A Life.
The show offers viewers a unique viewpoint of dramatic real-life rescues.
Airing on September 13, the episode will follow Maryport Rescue during a through-the-night call to a yacht in distress just off Flimby, with the boat being towed back to Workington Harbour.
Operations Manager Michael Messenger, who has dedicated 39 years to the service and describes his role as a 'way of life', said: “Maryport Rescue is quite unique in what we do.
"We have two lifeboats covering the Solway Firth. We have a swift water and flood rescue team covering all of Cumbria and we’re on the National Asset Register, so we can be called to assist floods anywhere in the year.
“We also do search and rescue for vulnerable people, so that’s inland. We cover aspects from all over.
"You never know the minute when you’ll be called out to a situation of distress," he said.
The team, made up entirely of volunteers, has already responded to 24 callouts this year, following 38 last year.
In addition to being featured on TV, the team will also be honored this week with the King's Coronation Medal, awarded to members who have served for over five years.
The majority of the 33-strong volunteer team will receive this recognition for their dedication and commitment.
With Belfast Coastguard coming to present the award on Wednesday, Sir Tony Cunningham and Lady Anne Cunningham, strong advocates for the charity, will also be there.
The charity relies on donations to keep the life-saving service operating. To donate, you can visit https://www.maryportrescue.co.uk/donations/
You will be able to watch Maryport Rescue's TV feature at 8 pm on Channel 5, on September 13. Episode five will also be available for viewing on catch-up via Channel 5's website following its airing.
