WHITEHAVEN Theatre Group revive a feel-good tap dance comedy with relatable characters and laughter on tap.
Stepping Out is a warm and very funny play by Richard Harris about the lives, laughs, and loves of a group of women and one man attending a weekly tap dance class in a dingy north London church hall.
It follows the story of a group of amateur tap dancers from different backgrounds as they rehearse for an upcoming recital, under the watchful eye of Mavis, a former professional chorus girl who tries her hardest to teach the bumbling amateurs some dancing skills.
Each week the characters give a glimpse into the struggles of their everyday lives, ranging from the challenges of parenting - to suffering in unhappy relationships.
Jodie Morgan brings real enthusiasm to the role of Mavis, and Scarlett Todhunter is sharply comic as the affluent, well-meaning Vera.
Louisa Morton nails the timid and incredibly anxious personality of Andy and Shaun Donald is superb as the bumbling widower, Geoffrey.
Kayleigh Morgan plays well-meaning student nurse Lynne with real conviction and Hannah Dorney brings warmth and sassiness to the role of confident businesswoman Maxine.
Maria Morton is instantly likable as anxious Dorothy and Vanessa Turpin keeps the audience hooked as the bubbly and funny Sylvia.
Jennifer Todhunter is hilarious as piano accompanist Mrs Fraser and Debbie Atkinson is perfectly cast as the fun and outgoing Rose.
The characters are all relatable and their relationships with each other feel very authentic. The tap dance routine at the end of the show is a treat to watch and will have the audience tapping their feet along too.
Stepping Out is showing at the Rosehill Theatre in Whitehaven from Wednesday, September 4 until Saturday, September 7. Tickets can be purchased online here.
