PLANS for a new car park at a Carlisle hospital have been submitted to Cumberland Council.

The planning application, which was received on Tuesday (August 27), is for an area of grassland covering an area of 0.65 hectares at Cumberland Infirmary in Newtown Road.

As well as the car park the application requests planning permission for associated infrastructure for the development.

According to the design and access statement it would be towards the north west corner of the site, to the west of a helicopter landing pad, and there are a number of listed buildings which are in the vicinity of the site.

These include:

  • the doctor’s residence to the south-west of the main hospital entrance which is Grade II listed;
  • the Old Cumberland Infirmary is to the south-east of the main building and is Grade II* listed;
  • walls and gates associated with the infirmary building which are Grade II listed;
  • the Pillars building which is currently used as the headquarters of the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust which is Grade II* listed.

The report states: "There is an established vehicular access onto Newtown Road to the south of the main building.

"The public car parks can be south to the south along with a staff car park. A further staff car park is located to the north-west, adjacent to the helicopter landing pad.

"An internal access road leads around the hospital building to the north which exits onto Infirmary Street.

"There are residential properties to the south-west and the west of the application site, notably Coledale Meadows."

According to the report the development would provide 180 parking spaces and it would be surfaced with tarmac.

The report states: "It would incorporate an attenuation tank for the storage of surface water that would discharge into the existing system.

"The car park would be sited so that the 50-metre radius from the centre of the helicopter landing pad would be maintained.

"Additional lighting would be provided as part of the development which is a necessary safety feature for the staff using the car park.

"Landscaping would be provided between the application site and the properties in Coledale Meadows."

The planning application is currently being considered by officers at the council's planning department.
