A former Cumbrian MP has criticised Labour’s plan to withdraw the winter fuel allowance to pensioners.
The benefit was previously available to almost everyone in the UK born before September 25, 1957 to help cover their heating costs.
However, from this winter only those on pension credit or means-tested benefits will get the winter fuel payment.
Across the Cumberland Council area, just over 10,000 residents are set to receive the payments down from the 115,578 who receive them now.
Former Workington MP and Penrith and the Solway candidate, Mark Jenkinson said it was a ‘senseless’ attack on pensioners.

“Many will be surviving on less than £1,000 per month with no additional support and rent to pay,” said Mr Jenkinson.
“It's a senseless attack on some of the most vulnerable in society after they promised the opposite.”
Labour have said the decision was necessary to fill the ‘black hole’ in the public finances left by the previous Conservative government.
