A community in north Cumbria has raised hundreds of pounds for a vital children's charity through D-Day commemorations in June.

The Wetheral Playing Field Association (WPFA) has presented Jigsaw, Cumbria's Children's Hospice with a cheque for £500 that had been raised by the village community at its D-Day event on June 2.

It was an afternoon filled with family fun with music from The Border Concert Band, delicious cakes from the Wetheral WI, games, drinks, a tombola, and a raffle.

Stephen Higgs, treasurer of the WPFA, said: "It's a very worthwhile local charity and we know that any donations we make will be used for the people of the local community."

The fundraising day raised £1500 in total with £1000 going towards keeping the Wetheral pavillion and playing field afloat.

The majority of the money raised was through the raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.

The Pavillion's finances suffered following an increase in utility bills about 18 months ago, so instead of asking the clubs that use it to pay more, the WPFA decided to get the local community involved through fundraising events.

These fundraisers help to bridge the gap between what the users pay and what it actually costs to run the facility.

Eleanor Viney, fundraising manager at the hospice, said: "‘We are delighted to be chosen and once again supported by Wetheral Playing Fields Association. We’re grateful to everyone that took part in the fabulous day of fundraising.

"Jigsaw, Cumbria’s only children’s hospice provides care to children and young adults with life-limiting illnesses across the county, and this care is only possible thanks to the kindness and generosity of our wonderful local community.

"Huge thanks go to Stephen and the committee for making days like those in June happen, to ensure hospice care is possible for local families."
