A family-run shoe retailer is stepping into a new chapter in Penrith as they are set to move from its current unit to a larger and more central location this week.

Strolling 4 Shoes, which was established in 2005, will be moving into the former ‘Works’ shop on 2 Devonshire Street this coming Thursday, September 5.

Fraser Marshall, who took over the business from his parents two years ago, said: "For us the unit is a bigger space, it’s more usable and we feel it's a much better location in the centre of the town."

The new location will continue to showcase an extensive range of footwear, including popular brands such as Skechers, Birkenstocks, Reiker, Fly London, and Gabor.

Going against the notion that brick-and-mortar retail is 'dying', Fraser is confident in the continued appeal of market towns like Penrith: "We feel in market towns, like Penrith, full of independent shops, they are still destination towns.

"We want to be a destination shop in that. Our idea is for people to plan a nice day out, come to Penrith, go for lunch, have a walk, and then know they will have several independent stores where they can find something they haven’t seen before and enjoy good old-fashioned retail."

With around 20 staff members, including across their other stores in Richmond and Cockermouth, Fraser praised a 'fantastic team' which have gone on to help the business scoop up Independent Footwear Retailer of the Year at the Drapers Footwear Awards in London back in 2023.

"We look forward to seeing old and new faces," he said.

“A thank you to all the customers for your continued support. I hope you like the new shop and that it will be a nice addition to Penrith's main street."

To celebrate the business, which has had a presence in Penrith since 2006, customers are being invited to enjoy a complimentary glass of fizz and 10 per cent discount on the new season’s stock.

Meanwhile, the previous shop at 9 Corn Market will remain open for the next few weeks as a clearance outlet.

And whilst the shop and branding will have a new spruced-up look, you can be assured it will still be "the same shop at heart".

Strolling 4 Shoes will be open for business seven days a week with hours from 9.30am to 5pm Monday through Saturday, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
