THE heart of Carlisle is undergoing significant changes as a major redevelopment project advances.

Work on the multi-million-pound Market Square and Greenmarket Regeneration Project began last month.

If all goes as planned, the city centre’s 6,000-square-metre space will be transformed into a vibrant hub for both locals and visitors, featuring a newly designed 'multifunctional events space.'

Over £80million in public funding from various sources is expected to be invested in revitalising Carlisle's city centre.

As part of the changes, two prominent trees have been removed, and the war memorial will be relocated as English Street is reconfigured into two walkways.

The project, which is set to be completed by spring 2025, is being handled by Eric Wright Civil Engineering. While the extensive construction may cause some disruption to the city’s events programme, the council has pledged to provide regular updates on any changes.

Although the project aims to enhance the city’s appeal and attract more visitors, it has already impacted some local groups.

The maker collective Quirky Eclectica has postponed its pop-up events until further notice, and Cumbria Pride has announced it will not hold a march this year.

Leader of Cumberland Council, councillor Mark Fryer, said: "The regeneration projects we are managing in Carlisle highlight Cumberland Council's commitment to enhancing our already attractive and historic city.

“Beginning this August, the Market Square and Greenmarket Regeneration Project will transform Carlisle's city centre into a vibrant, multifunctional space that will benefit both residents and visitors.

“We are dedicated to keeping the public and local businesses informed throughout the process, and we appreciate everyone's patience as we work to make our city even more inviting."
