A farm manager is embarking on a 5,000-mile journey through Scotland to the Sahara Desert, starting at a Cumbrian hospice.

Hugh Chamberlain, the farm manager at Atholl Estates, is setting off on September 12 to undertake the expedition in a 1993 Land Rover Defender 300tdi.

He is doing this in tribute to his late father-in-law, Tony Rawlings, who passed away at Eden Valley Hospice after a battle with cancer.

Mr Rawlings had planned and modified the Land Rover for this very journey before his death, and Mr Chamberlain hopes to honour his adventurous spirit by completing the trip.

Mr Chamberlain will be joined by his friend, Dave Hill, and the pair will navigate the route relying solely on 'maps and intuition'.

The expedition will test their endurance and resilience, and they hope to raise funds for two charities close to both families’ hearts: Eden Valley Hospice in Carlisle and agricultural charity RSABI.

The pair will be leaving from Eden Valley Hospice for three weeks, starting on September 12 at 3pm.

Mr Chamberlain said: "In honour of Tony’s legacy, we are embarking on this expedition to prove that even amidst loss, dreams can endure, and compassion can ignite change.

"It is our hope that through this challenge, we will provide a beacon of hope and support to those in Scottish agriculture and the hospice community.

"We gratefully welcome any donations which will enable our two chosen charities to continue delivering the all-important support and services they provide.”

Eden Valley Hospice provides specialist care for adults in north Cumbria with life-limiting conditions and support for their families, friends, and carers.

The hospice's fundraising manager, Eleanor Viney, said: "As a charity, we rely on the kindness of our local community to provide the specialist end-of-life care that local families need.

"Without the generosity of local people such as Hugh and Dave, we couldn’t support families affected by life-limiting illness during such difficult times.

"We wish them both the best of luck on their adventure."

Mr Chamberlain's challenge has been made possible by the generosity of sponsors from the community including Simon Huntington, Lloyd Ltd Carlisle, and Fluscowood Homes.
