Carlisle used as filming location for BBC 'Learning English' series

Locations around the city double as London, Oxford and Cambridge for a 10-part series to help people learn English.

The series has been made by the BBC’s ‘Learning English’ department which receives one million views a week from around the globe.

The producer of the series, Beth Stacey, is originally from Carlisle and she said she was ‘proud’ that the city was able to feature in the series.

“I’m the creator and when I was making it, I was thinking that it would be really nice to have some of Carlisle in the series,” said Beth.

“We knew that we were going to Cambridge, and I thought, do we want to go to Cambridge or do we want to go to Carlisle? So all of the scenes in Cambridge are actually Carlisle.

"We used Warwick Road and some of the other streets, as Carlisle is so beautiful in so many ways.

“So many of the streets have that same old-fashioned feel with the brickwork - it was a perfect substitute.”

Carlisle railway station also features in the series as a double for a London station.

The series used two Cumbrian actors (Conor Neaves and Eireann Devlin) two Carlisle businesses (OKA Tapasu and Warwick Bazaar) and a house in Wetheral.

Beth grew up in Carlisle and was a member of StagedRight youth theatre company before heading off to university. After a brief stint as a teacher, she became a producer at the BBC.

“I'm a producer and having this job is just so perfect for me. I absolutely love it,” said Beth.

“I've got all this sort of presenting that I do including the writing and the creative side of it but I also get to do the linguistic background so it's a great job for me.”
