A POPULAR West Cumbrian cricket club will benefit from a new development - after planning permission for the extension of the venue has been approved by Cumberland council.

In February, Workington Cricket Club submitted a planning application to Cumberland council for the development of their site located at the Cloffocks in Workington.

The club said that the new development would allow it to keep up with the rising demand placed on the venue by many different sporting clubs in the area. These developments include a proposed extension to its existing clubhouse providing additional changing rooms and a viewing platform.

Plans were approved for the development of the cricket club last Wednesday, September 4, subject to a number of conditions, with an officer's report stating that plans were acceptable due to them 'supporting an existing recreation facility and can therefore be supported'.

The club has a growing community, with a number of different sports clubs run from the site, in addition to multiple cricket teams.

At the time the application was submitted to the council, a spokesman from the Workington Cricket Club said that the application will 'ensure we can accommodate the expanding needs for all our local users of the facility, as a true multi sports facility, and in particular will improve the provision of dedicated female and accessible changing facilities'.

“The club already supports five adult cricket teams, including one all-female team, three junior cricket teams, as well as junior football through the winter, and the weekly Workington parkrunners, therefore the current facilities are not sufficient to meet the growing diversity of demands placed on the facility”, the spokesman said.

Since plans were first submitted, the club has gone through a process of looking for a number of sponsors and investors to support the construction phase of the project.
