A well prepared paddleboarder ran into trouble off the coast of St Bees today (September 6).

Arriving at the scene, Whitehaven Coastguard discovered that St.Bees RNLI, along with a brave member of public, had already pulled the distressed paddler to safety.

Coastguard Rescue officers checked both the paddleboarder and the member of the public who had entered the water to assist, with no injuries or ailments being reported.

A spokesperson from Whitehaven Coastguard said: "We’d like to highlight that all individuals involved were equipped with the proper safety gear, including buoyancy aids. Unfortunately, they were caught off-guard by unexpected offshore winds, proving just how unpredictable conditions at sea can be.

"With good weather expected this weekend, we urge everyone enjoying the coast to make sure they are fully prepared, wearing the appropriate safety gear like buoyancy aids.

"If you do find yourself or someone else in difficulty along the coast don't hesitate in calling 999 and asking for the coastguard."
