An event will be serving up traditional Palestinian food while discussing life in the West Bank.

The Palestine Solidarity Group Carlisle and District will be hosting Marwan Darweish, a Palestinian professor of peace studies at the University of Coventry, who has been researching the effects of illegal settlers on Palestinian life in the West Bank.

Professor Darweish will show two short films about the experiences of the South Hebron Hills area of Masafer Yatta.

He will also give a talk on the current situation in the region and answer questions.

Fiona Goldie, of the advocacy group, said: "Masafer Yatta hit the headlines in 2022 when the Israeli court ruled that communities in Palestine there should be destroyed, following a 23-year long trial - a breach of international law.

“There are now many new settler communities emerging, and while all eyes have been, quite rightly, on Gaza, during this difficult time, violence against Palestinians in the West Bank has increased dramatically and many have been forced from their homes and even killed by the illegal settler communities.

"Hebron and the surrounding areas have been a ‘hotspot’ of settler violence for many many years. We are looking forward to hosting Marwan and raising further awareness of the situation.”

The event will take place at the Church of Scotland, Chapel Street, Carlisle, on October 4 at 6pm.

People are welcome to donate to help cover costs.
