FOR this Nostalgia edition we wanted to take a look at the importance of nature.

Nature truly is fascinating and it helps us to develop a better understanding for the world around us.

It underpins our economy, our society, indeed our very existence.

Our forests and oceans provide us with the food that we eat and water that we drink, these assets are often referred to as the world's 'natural capital.'

They are also beneficial to our economy through tourism, farming, and forestry work.

Nowadays people often exploit nature, but it is important not to take it for granted as it can have an impact on our world as a whole.

Here in Cumbria and the rest of the UK, people tend to hold natural heritage in greater importance than that of buildings and cities.

Over the years Cumbrians have also done well to stress the importance of nature to the modern world.

Throughout history, artists and poets have used Cumbria's natural spaces as a catalyst for their art and creation.

Famously, William Wordsworth who has been recognised the world over for his influential poetry and writings describing the natural world in the Lake District.

Even today, artists the world over are still fascinated by the natural beauty found right here in Cumbria, whether it be the rugged western coastline or the stunning beauty of the mountains and lakes.

As part of children's education, many schools try to incorporate nature into their curriculums to show young people the importance of sustaining natural ecosystems.

These photos show how Cumbrians have explored and enjoyed nature over the years.
