University of Cumbria will welcome back students new and old next week, as freshers week officially kicks off on September 16.

Those unfamiliar with Carlisle may well be wondering the best spots to visit in the city, where they can feel comfortable and make friends in a new environment.

Whether you are sporty or artsy, musical or outdoorsy, love a night out or don't drink at all, this list of Cumbrian activities will hopefully make things easier for students in the area.

1. Carlisle Welcome Fair

Some of the best places to make friends at university are at clubs and societies. A welcome fair will take place on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 from 11.30am at the Fusehill St Sports Centre, and will feature representatives from a lot of different groups - which is a great place to meet like-minded individuals, or try something new.

2. Bars and pubs

There is a great selection of pubs and bars in Carlisle, particularly on the new-look Devonshire Street, where you can find popular local spots such as the Thin White Duke, In the Meantime, The Printyard and The Last Zebra. Botchergate is also home to several Wetherspoons and Game On! which can be great fun if you like to drink.

3. Clubs and societies

For those who loves the outdoors, Carlisle has plenty of sports clubs, where you can take advantage of all the green spaces Cumbria has to offer. The Lake District is just a short distance away for those who like to hike, while Twentee-total is also a popular option for alcohol-free outdoor activities in the city.

4. Music scene

Carlisle has a thriving music scene, with three great venues that accommodate to all ages and tastes. The Brickyard, the Old Fire Station and The Source are all great venues.

5. Historical spots

Cumbria has a rich history and there are plenty of places for new students to visit across the region. The castle and cathedral in Carlisle are two great options to visit with friends, while the Tullie museum and art gallery is also expected to reopen this Autumn.
