TRIBUTES are flooding in from both the horse racing world and the farming community following the death of Antonia Reid, aged 62.
Not only were horses her life having helped to power Nicky Richard's successful training operation at Greystoke for over 25 years, but Antonia also guided one of Cumbria's major agricultural shows as its secretary.
This week, Skelton Show's Show Director, John Slee, paid tribute to Antonia, saying for 22 years she had 'guided and cajoled' them as she carried out the many unseen duties that are so important to the smooth running of a show.
"We had many happy times together sometimes over a glass of wine, as we cross checked to ensure everything was covered. She had so many contacts and will be sorely missed. She has left the show big boots to fill.
"It was lovely that she was able to attend this year’s show and judge the mounted fancy dress class. Horses have played a massive part in her life.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tarn, Michael and the family as they come to terms with their untimely loss. May she rest in peace."
At Cartmel Races on the Monday following Antonia's death on Saturday, August 24, all the jockeys wore black armbands and there was a minute's silence.
Nicky Richards Racing Facebook page also paid tribute to Antonia saying: "Antonia was and always will be a part of the family here at Greystoke, she had been part of the team and racing industry for numerous years and will be hugely missed by all."
Antonia was known and loved by many people and will leave a massive hole in the team that will never be replaced!
Skelton Show chairman, Nina Oxley, said Antonia had taken her under her wing and taught her the ropes when she was elected vice chair. "We had some fun times both during the shows and over a glass of wine at interim show meetings.
"Sadly, she wasn’t able to join me as secretary when I became chairman but she was always at the end of the phone for advice and support as we undertook this year’s show without her at the helm to organise us.
"She said we’d done her proud, when she did make it on show day which was lovely. It was truly an honour to know her and I just wished we’d had more time together. She will be sadly missed. "
In her honour Skelton Show committee are to have a special award in time for next year's show and beyond, to ensure Antonia's legacy will live on. "Ideas still to be worked up , but the intention is Antonia Reid will always be a name which everyone hears at our show as she meant so much to us all," added Nina.
