PEACE protesters took to the streets of Carlisle again this weekend to raise awareness of investments funding the arms trade.

The Palestine Solidarity Group held their weekly vigil near Barclays and HSBC banks, highlighting their alleged involvement in funding weapons development companies.

The group is currently hosting two petitions.

One calls for the divestment of Cumbria's councils' pension scheme funds from companies that they group continues to claim profit from war, such as Rolls Royce, BAE and HSBC.

"We urge Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness councils to take immediate measures to divest pension contributions from companies complicit in Israel’s violations of Palestinian rights," said Fiona Goldie of the Carlisle branch of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC).

The group hopes Cumbria’s councils will adopt a similar policy to Waltham Forest Council which has now vowed to divest from companies involved with the arms trade.

The other petition urges local MPs to end the UK's arms trade, connecting with their continuing campaign against James Croppers PLC.

The group will continue their weekly vigils in Carlisle city centre each Saturday from 1pm-2pm to call for peace, justice, and a ceasefire.

A film screening and speaker event will be held at Church of Scotland on Friday, October 4.

Reality of Everyday Life in the West Bank will be a catered event and will see Marwan Darweish, a Palestinian professor of peace studies at the University of Coventry, in attendance from 6pm-8pm.
