FOR this Nostalgia edition we wanted to take a look at how Cumbrians have embraced all things fantasy.

On September 22, it is Hobbit Day as a reference to the birthday of the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins from J.R.R Tolkein's Lord of the Rings.

Lord of the Rings is a much loved aspect of the fantasy world with a whole host of other exciting fictional universes.

Many Cumbrians use Cosplay as a way of expressing their love for fantasy, sci-fi, comic books, TV shows, and films.

Cosplay is a performance art and hobby where people dress up as characters from a work of fiction and act as if they were that character.

The term is a combination of the words "costume" and "play" and originated in America, though the word itself is Japanese.

Cosplay can involve a lot of creativity and construction, and some people spend a lot of time and money on their costumes. Others use cheap materials and household items to create their outfits.

Throughout North and West Cumbria, some towns hold Comic Con events, modelled off the internationally renowned annual event in San Diego.

It gives people the opportunity to dress up as their favourite characters and meet with other like minded individuals.

Towns like Carlisle and Whitehaven have been hosting these types of events for a number of years and they have been incredibly successful.

Often times competitions are held for the best dressed characters and people attending can buy memorabilia and merchandise from vendors at stalls.

These photos show how Cumbrians have enjoyed Cosplay over the years.
