CARLISLE Cathedral has used funding to refurbish part of a medieval tower on the site.

This funding has been made possible by Cumberland Council.

The tower dates back hundreds of years and offers a lot of historical value to Carlisle.

In a post on social media, Carlisle Cathedral wrote: "Thanks to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund/Levelling Up funding and Cumberland Council, we have used a High Street Building Grant to part-fund the refurbishment the ground floor of our medieval Prior’s Tower.

"The Prior's Tower is a three-story building set within the Cathedral precinct, built in the late 15th or early 16th century.

"The ground floor is a multi-purpose space which is used as a breakout space or waiting area for the meeting room on the first floor, as well as a storage area for our educational resources.

"The Prior's Room on the first floor has a grand stone fireplace with 16th-century woodwork, and an original painted ceiling which is both an important and rare example, loaded with symbolism and references to local families including the Dacres, Percys, Greystokes, and Senhouses."
