THE NHS has provided a sneak peek inside the new development at West Cumberland Hospital.

This is part of the £40million investment in Phase 2 of the redevelopment at the site.

Doors open to the new centre on Monday, September 23.

It consists of four wards: a rehabilitation ward, the Copeland Unit for general illness, the Loweswater Suite for palliative care, and on the upper floor a Children's and Young People's Ward then an Elderly Care Unit.

A North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC) spokesperson said: "The redevelopment is now ready and waiting to take care of the very first patients.  Teams from both the Loweswater suite and Copeland Unit will be the first to move, followed by Children and Young People, Care of the Elderly, and finally the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit.

"Staff from across NCIC will be on hand to make the transition as smooth as possible, moving patients, furniture, and equipment over to the new wards, in the hope that everyone will be settled into their new homes by the end of the month."

On the ground floor, there is also an outside courtyard that can be used for patients in palliative care to spend time with their friends and family.

Beds and wheelchairs can easily be transported out to the courtyard to make the process more convenient.

It also allows stroke patients in the rehabilitation unit to access physio and movement therapy to speed up their recovery.

A 'Challenge Path' has been installed with increasing degrees of difficulty, which will be used as part of the rehabilitation treatment.

The spokesperson continued: "Patients will benefit from the use of a private courtyard including palliative patients who could spend time outdoors should they wish, with their own entrance to a private courtyard.

"Patients receiving stroke rehabilitation treatment will also have an outdoor area to undertake rehab outdoors."

The plan for the first floor including the children's unit and elderly ward has also been explained.

"Elderly care will have both four bedded areas as well as single rooms after feedback from patients stated they felt they benefitted from the company of others while recognising single rooms allow for privacy.
