Excitement is building ahead of a huge ultramarathon event in the Lake District next week.
The 13 Valleys Ultra is one of the most epic endurance events in the UK, offering runners an incredible opportunity to explore the stunning landscapes of the Lake District.
Scheduled to start in Keswick at 6pm on Friday, September 27, this race covers the region’s 13 iconic valleys, celebrating the UNESCO World Heritage site with a challenge for marathon runners from Cumbria and further afar.
Participants can choose from four distances: the 2 Valleys (22km), 5 Valleys (55km), 7 Valleys (110km), or the full 13 Valleys (180km). Each course offers a unique trail experience, showcasing the breathtaking beauty of the Lake District.
Runners must tackle rugged terrain, steep climbs, and unpredictable weather as they make their way across some of England’s most scenic fells. The highest point of the course reaches over 800 metres, and it promises to be a test of endurance and mental toughness, with last year's winner Mark Darbyshire finishing in just under 23 hours.
For less experienced runners or those looking for a shorter challenge, the 2 Valleys route (21km) is ideal, while the 55km and 110km distances offer intermediate options. The courses are partially waymarked, requiring runners to rely on their navigation skills and knowledge of the trails. However, feed stations are available along the routes, offering crucial support in the form of food, hydration, and medical assistance.
Anyone interested in completing the 13 Valleys challenge must sign a self-declaration statement ahead of the event to acknowledge their preparedness for the physical and mental demands of the race.
Organised in partnership with the Lake District National Park, the event also emphasises sustainability, as a portion of each entry fee is donated to the Lake District Foundation, which supports local environmental conservation projects.
Ticket prices range from £65 to £210 depending on the distance and are available to buy online.
