Workington Reds returned to winning ways with a welcome home victory over Whitby Town.

Mark Fell's side claimed a convincing 3-1 win at Borough Park to end a three-game losing run.

The Northern Premier League Premier Division clash saw veteran David Norris grab his first Reds goal, the 43-year-old on target after a Steven Rigg pass.

Rigg himself then doubled Reds' lead before Dav Symington fired a third.

Ex-Carlisle United man Nathan Thomas scored a late consolation but Workington secured the points to move up to 14th in the table.

After a first win in five league games in front of 602 fans, manager Fell responded to recent criticism from some fans of his decision to sign Norris.

"That old man that I've signed, trying to help my mate out...he's not bad is he?" Fell said in a club interview.

"Some of the stuff [I've heard] is laughable.

"The reason David Norris is here is because he makes runs like that. You don't play 200 Championship, Football League games if you're not a clever player.

"Great goal, great assist...it was vintage from him." Next up for Workington is a Fred Conway Cumberland Cup clash with Mirehouse.

Penrith's hopes of an FA Vase run were ended in the second qualifying round, meanwhile.

Darren Edmondson's side were beaten 2-1 at home by Padiham.

Matthew Coombe shot Penrith into the lead but Joel Melia levelled for the visitors before the break, then Jakob Hebda struck a winner for the Lancashire outfit.

The Bonny Blues' defeat, as well as Kendal Town's 1-0 reverse at Horden Community Welfare, ends Cumbrian interest in the Vase for another campaign. Penrith return to league action at Blyth Town next weekend.

Their fellow Northern League Division One side Carlisle City were not in action this weekend, with their next league game on home soil against West Auckland Town next Saturday.
