A PROPOSAL to convert a former art gallery and studio in Cockermouth into a residential property has been given the go-ahead.

The application lodged by Green Swallow North Ltd to change the use of the closed Skylark Studio on South Street was given the green light by Cumberland Council planners on September 24.

The studio, known for selling crafts, gifts, fashion jewellery which were all made on the premises, as well as greetings cards and calendars, closed on December 24, 2023.

The company carries on trading online via its website.

The planners' report said: "The site lies outside, but directly adjacent to the town centre boundaries for Cockermouth.

"Given the siting of the property outside of the defined town centre, officers do not oppose the loss of this commercial unit and it will not impact on the vitality or viability of the town centre.

"Whilst the property does not have any parking associated with it given the town centre location there are nearby public car parks that could serve these needs and good connection to public transport."

The conversion will also involve the replacement of the windows and doors in timber, and removal of the existing metal frames from the windows.
