A walker was airlifted to hospital after taking a 'significant fall' near Sty Head Path, Bursting Knott.

The incident occurred on September 19 at around 2pm.

The walker injured his hand and knee and was unable to walk further.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) was called to the scene at 1.57pm, with Duddon and Furness MRT also assisting due to low numbers.

A serious traffic incident on the lakeside road posed a potential delay, so a Coastguard helicopter, Rescue 936 from Caernarfon, was also requested.

The walker had taken a fall near Sphinx Ridge on Great Gable and was thoroughly medically assessed.

Fortunately, no serious injuries were detected.

After receiving pain relief and being placed in a full-body splint, the walker was handed over to the Coastguard team.

He was then winched into the helicopter for transfer to hospital.

A spokesperson from Wasdale MRT said: "Our thanks to both Duddon and Furness MRT and the Rescue 936 team for their help once again, and also to the walkers who stopped to help and made the initial call.

"We wish the walker a quick recovery from his injuries."
