AN inquest into the death of a man who died over two weeks after breaking his hip in a care home has been opened.
Robert Davidson, 76, died at 9pm on July 1, 2024, at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
Area Coroner for Cumbria, Ms Kirsty Gomersal, said that Mr Davidson, of Maryport, was admitted to the emergency department at the Cumberland Infirmary on June 14 after suffering from an unwitnessed fall at a care home.
He was discharged back to the care home but subsequently readmitted to hospital in Carlisle, where he passed away.
A post-mortem report offered a cause of death of ischaemic heart disease, ischaemic colitis, and a hip fracture.
Secondary causes were given of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and an acute kidney infection.
Ms Gomersal said that because hip fracture 'materially contributed' to Mr Davidson's death, which was an unnatural cause, an inquest is required.
Ms Gomersal set a provisional date for a conclusion to the inquest of January 30, 2025.
