A parent-teacher association is set to host its first-ever colour run in a bid to raise money for a local primary school.

The Friends of Hayton School Parent Teacher Association is a registered charity and aims to support Hayton CofE Primary School by raising money at events that it holds.

In the past, the Friends of Hayton School have hosted events such as a cheese and wine night for the wider community at Hayton Village Hall, as well as Christmas events that have all raised money for the primary school.

Gillian Todd was made the chair of the Friends of Hayton PTA earlier this year and ahead of the colour run was on hand to explain more about the group and the event.

She said: "The PTA has gone from two people doing everything to a committee that is also supported by volunteers on the day of the events we hold.

"A lot of the events we do are opened up to the community of Hayton, so we did a cheese and wine night at the local village hall and that was really well received and we raised around £500 for the school.

"The school is very lucky that it has a big playing field and sports area but the shed that holds all the equipment is over 20 years old and it is not watertight anymore.

"As we are raising money for the new sports shed, we thought we would do something sporty and the colour run was perfect for us."

Money raised by the group has also been used in the past to help the school pay for new reading books as well as subsidising school trips.

She said: "This year we are helping the school pay for new fiction and non-fiction books.

"We have also paid for things like buses for school trips to the pantomime and helped towards a trip to the Newcastle Life Centre and new play equipment.

"It is lovely, it is a lot of work but we have got a good team and we always have a good laugh doing it, it is nice to know that you can do something to help the school."
